I HAVE A DREAM.

Hello everyone!
For Peace Day, we have learned about the history of racist segregation and discrimination in the USA, and we have seen the inspiring speech given by Martin Luther King Jr., "I have a dream".
Here you can watch the video again, and I have also uploaded the document I gave you, with part of the speech's transcription, adapted for you.
It is worth watching the whole video, but it may be too long and difficult to understand, so if you prefer, you can only watch the parts we have been working on:
- From the beginning to minute 3:10
- From minute 11:50 to the end

As we already said in class, Martin Luther King was a very good public speaker. He knew when to lower or raise his voice, make pauses, or say sentences quickly, to get people's attention and provoke emotion.
His speech is also full of literary devices, like metaphors or repetition.

  • Can you identify some of the metaphors that Martin Luther King used in his speech? What do you think they mean?
  • Can you pick up examples of repetition in his speech? What effect do they make on the audience?

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Hi Macarena, I´m Elena of 6D I´ve found some metaphors in Martin Luther King´s speech:

-this decree comes as joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.
-the life of the Negro is still crippled by segregation and discrimination.
-One hundred years later the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.
-even the state of mississippi will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

    Love Elena :)

  4. I am Elsa and my metaphor is : "The Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity", that means that black people are discriminated by white people and anyone pay them atention so they live like the midle of a place where almost no one like them.(The lonley island in an ocean).

    1. * ...and no one pays attention to them, so they live in the middle...

Very well done, Elsa. You've explained what this metaphor means to you very clearly!

  5. Hello Macarena I am Paula Bodega:
Some of the metaphors that Martin Luther King used in him speech are:
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their caracter . "
I learn that it means that we don't have to judged people by their color of skin or the outside of the body,we have to judged inside the body, if they´re good or bad people .

One example is that he said many times: I have a dream today!
They make on the audience be more atentive .

And other metaphore is when he said :
"I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
I learn that we can live black and white people together , and it doesn´t import their skin.

    1. *(line 2) ...used in his speech...
      ** (line 5) ... that we shouldn't judge...
*** (last line) ...and the colour of their skin doesn't matter.

Very well done, Paula! I absolutely agree with you as regards the repetition of "I have a dream today!". However, I think that the two sentences that you have chosen as metaphors were probably meant literally, he really hopes that his children will be judged by the content of their character and not by the colour of their skin.
What do you think? Read the rest of the comments and try to think of another sentence that shows a clearer metaphor.
Your text was very well written, though! Continue like this ;)

  7. Hi, Maca. I´m Isabel X.6ºC

I´m writing you because the 3 or 4 lasts coments I had written weren´t seen by you.

I wrote about Martin Luther King, well I will start again:

I don´t remember it very well but i´m sure that Martin L.K. said that white people were living black people in a lonley

island, this means that black people didn´t have the same rights like white people, they didn´t have the right of

having a good job , this means that they received less money in their jobs.(This is only an example)

    1. Good Isabel, I'm glad you could finally make it work. Interesting points, I agree with your interpretation of the metaphor of the lonely island. Although they did have the right to have a job, they were discriminated as to the type of jobs they could get, so, as you said, they earned less money in general. Well done!
